Clock in, take a break, and clock out on your phone

Who can do this: Crew, Foreman

Included in: Craftsman, Pro, Pro+

By the end of this article, you will have clocked in to a project on your phone, taken a break and clocked out. Clocking in starts recording your working time on a project, and clocking out stops it. A break is a pause of a length you choose when you start it, and break time is not counted as working time.

Before you start

You must be assigned to at least one project. Until you are, your home screen shows "You're all set up" and offers no project to clock in to. An admin or a manager assigns you: see Assign crew to projects so they can clock in.

Steps

You can take these steps on your home screen. You can also select the round Clock button in the bar at the bottom of any screen: it opens a panel with the same buttons.

  1. Open your home screen: sign in to Trades at Work on your phone, or select Home at the bottom of the screen. The home screen has a card that says "Ready to start?".
  2. In the box under "Ready to start?", choose the project you are working on.
  3. Select Clock In.
  4. When you stop for a break, select Take Break.
  5. Choose how long the break is: select 10 min or 30 min. For another length, type the number of minutes in the Minutes box and select Start Break.
  6. When you are back at work, select End Break. Select it before the break's end time: when the break runs out, you are not clocked back in.
  7. At the end of your shift, select Clock Out.

What you see

  • After Clock In, the app shows "Clocked in" for a moment above the bar at the bottom of the screen. The card says "Currently working on", with the project's name and a timer counting up. The Clock button at the bottom of the screen shows the same running time.
  • When the break starts, the app shows "Break started". The card says "On Break", with "Back at" and the time the break ends, and how many minutes are left.
  • After End Break on your home screen, the app shows "Break ended — back to work". The card says "Currently working on" again, for the same project. In the Clock panel, End Break shows no message, and the panel shows the running clock again.
  • After Clock Out, the app shows "Clocked out", and the card says "Ready to start?" again.
  • The "THIS WEEK" box adds the time. Break time is not counted: see See your hours for the week.

If something blocks you

  • "Select a project first" after you select Clock In. No project is chosen in the box under "Ready to start?". Choose a project, then select Clock In again.
  • "Enter a break length from 1 to 120 minutes." after you select Start Break. The Minutes box is empty or holds 0. Type a number of minutes, or select 10 min or 30 min. The box takes whole minutes only: letters, a minus sign and a decimal point cannot be typed into it.
  • The card says "Ready to start?" when you come back from a break. The break ran out before you selected End Break, so you are not on the clock. Choose your project and select Clock In again.
  • "Needs resolution" on your home screen, with "your last shift never ended - tell your foreman", or with "a break on your record never ended - tell your foreman" when what was left open is a break. A clock-in or a break of yours was never ended and has been running too long for you to close it, so the card offers no Clock Out and no Clock In. Tell your foreman, who corrects the entry: see Review, correct, and resolve time entries.
  • "You're all set up" on your home screen, with "You're set up and awaiting your first job assignment." You are not assigned to a project yet. Ask your admin or manager to assign you.
  • The button you selected shows three dots instead of its name, and nothing changes. Your phone has lost its signal. When the phone is back online, the app finishes clocking you in or out.
