Set up sales taxes and discounts in the catalog
Who can do this: Admin
By the end of this article, your catalog holds the sales taxes you charge, each set to the kinds of line items it applies to, and the discounts your team can give. The line-item types a tax can apply to are the catalog's item types: material, labor, equipment, mileage, fee and allowance.
Before you start
- Know the tax rate your state or area charges, and which kinds of line items it applies to.
- Taxes and discounts live in the same catalog as your items. If you have not added items yet, see Build your catalog.
Steps
- Open the catalog. On a computer or tablet, select Catalog in the sidebar. On a phone, select More at the bottom of the screen, then select Catalog.
- Select the Taxes tab.
- Select Add Tax.
- Enter the tax's Name.
- Enter its Rate (%), as a percentage.
- Under Applies To, tick each line-item type the tax applies to: Material, Labor, Equipment, Mileage, Fee or Allowance.
- Select Save Tax.
- Select the Discounts tab.
- Select Add Discount.
- Enter the discount's Name.
- In Type, choose Percent (%) for a percentage off, or Flat ($) for a fixed amount off.
- Enter the discount in Value.
- Select Save Discount.
What you see
- After Save Tax, the app shows "Tax saved". The tax appears on the Taxes tab with its rate and an "Applies to:" line naming the line-item types you ticked.
- After Save Discount, the app shows "Discount saved". The discount appears on the Discounts tab with its value and the word Percent or Flat.
If something blocks you
- Save Tax or Save Discount stays unavailable and the form shows no message. The Name box is empty. Type a name.
- "Select at least one line-item type." in the Add Tax form, and Save Tax stays unavailable. Tick at least one type under Applies To.
- "pct: Too big: expected number to be <=100" after Save Tax. The rate is too high for a percentage. Enter the rate as a percentage, such as the rate your state charges.
- "Percent discounts are capped at 100." in the Add Discount form, and Save Discount stays unavailable. Enter a smaller percentage, or choose Flat ($) for a fixed amount off.
