Build your catalog: materials, labor, equipment, mileage, fees, allowances

By the end of this article, your catalog holds the items you sell, each with its cost and unit. The catalog is your price list: the Catalog page describes it as "the items, taxes, and discounts your estimates draw from". Items are grouped by type, one tab for each: materials, labor, equipment, mileage, fees and allowances.

Before you start​

Nothing needs to exist first. If you have not set up your business name and logo yet, you can do that before or after this article: see Set up your business identity.

Steps​

  1. Open the catalog. On a computer or tablet, select Catalog in the sidebar. On a phone, select More at the bottom of the screen, then select Catalog.
  2. Select the tab for the kind of item you are adding: Materials, Labor, Equipment, Mileage, Fees or Allowances.
  3. Select Add Item. The Add Catalog Item form opens with Type already set to match the tab.
  4. Enter the item's Name.
  5. Enter its Base Cost.
  6. Check Cost Unit. The app fills in a unit for the tab, such as each for materials, hour for labor, day for equipment, mile for mileage and flat for fees and allowances. Change it if you price the item by a different unit.
  7. If you use a markup on this item, enter it in Markup %.
  8. For materials and equipment, enter a Category. For labor, enter a Role. Mileage, fees and allowances ask for neither.
  9. Select Save Item.
  10. Repeat steps 2 to 9 for each item you want in your catalog.

What you see​

  • The app shows "Item saved", and the form closes.
  • The new item appears on its tab with its cost, unit, markup and, where the type has one, its category or role.
  • A tab with nothing on it yet says so, for example "No mileage items yet".

If something blocks you​

  • Save Item stays unavailable and the form shows "Required:" followed by the names of fields, such as "Required: Name, Base Cost, Category". Each field named is still empty. Fill in every field named. Base Cost accepts only digits and one decimal point, so a minus sign or a letter cannot be typed into it.
